This is one of my favorite subjects in art. I don’t know why but it makes me so happy to paint a flower composition and I can see that many of my students find the same kind of satisfaction from completed artwork with flowers.

This project doesn’t require much preparation or thought put into it. I have even used fake flowers but obviously, if you can get fresh flowers it will be more uplifting for your creativity. Composition doesn’t have to be complicated or overflowing with colours. You can simply set up what is handy and maybe add some surprising accent like funky looking vase or ribbons between the leaves, or some broken flowers next to the vase on the table, just use your imagination.
This is also a great “do it together” project. Children love to paint peddles of the flowers but for some strange reason, they are not keen on the leaves so much. You can be this supporting part and complete those elements which your child doesn’t want to paint and thanks to the teamwork you can create a beautiful masterpiece.
There is a good amount of blending involved too and maybe creating new colours to match the flowers in the composition. Try to keep one coloured background and the gray tones to make flowers to stand out in the middle.
Please e-mail me photos of your flower composition painting and I will be very happy to post it on the website and on our social media sites. I’m also planning to include this project into our future “parent & child” workshops which are going to start in the fall. Happy painting!
